Cambodia Sneak Peek

We are finally back in Korea after 18 days of traveling in Thailand and Cambodia! It’s strange to be back and teaching classes, though we are only playing a few review games with the students before graduation next week. Then it will be spring vacation for the rest of February and we will be off on more adventures, this time around Korea.

2014: A Year in Review

HAPPY NEW YEARS! While we welcome a new year, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the one that has just concluded. 2014 was a year of transition for Hedgers Abroad. Finishing our contracts at our first job in Korea was a struggle of will and perspective that we eventually won; leading to a much better situation in public schools.

Interview With an Expat – Pete Lucarotti

A few weekends ago, we traveled to Boseong to visit one of our interesting expat friends named Pete. Apart from living in a wonderfully small and beautiful city, Pete is a talented potter. He offered to show us around his pottery studio and let us try our hand at the potting wheels if we came for a visit, so we naturally jumped at the opportunity.

Farewell, Fall – Gurye’s Temples

The winds in Yeosu warranted a weather alert, yesterday. These winds and the plummeting temperature mean that winter is now upon us. As we huddle for warmth in our apartments on the southern coast of South Korea, we look back on this country’s most stunning season: Fall.

Train Travels… Suncheon Bay

Most weekends, we stay pretty busy. There’s really no time to relax whenever there is so much to see and do! However, this past weekend we were feeling drained and found ourselves without any travel plans. We thought we would just have a nice lazy Saturday at home, but right around lunchtime we found ourselves already talking about what we should do for the day.

Gyeongbokgung – Seoul’s Largest Palace

Gyeongbokgung is one of Seoul’s most popular tourist destination for good reason.  While living in Seoul we made numerous trips to this massive palace and each time we found something new and fascinating. Gyeongbokgung, whose name roughly translates to mean “The Palace Greatly Blessed by Heaven,” served as the royal palace since the first buildings were constructed in 1395.

Train Travels – Suncheon Garden Expo

In Seoul, we did most of our travels via subway. The Seoul metro was rated the best subway system in the world by CNN  because of it’s cleanliness, technology, and ease of use. We were sad that we would be leaving such an amazing mode of transportation when we moved across the country to Yeosu. But then, we discovered something equally spectacular! Trains!

Yeosu at a Glance

We’ve been living in Yeosu for about two weeks now and have been loving every minute of it! We hope that you already caught our apartment tour earlier this week, and today we are giving you a peek of what our lovely city looks like. Yeosu was voted as one of the world’s four most scenic harbor cities, and it is easy to see why.

In Bloom

Flowers and trees are in full bloom all around Korea. Having legs and camera means that a great portion of our time is spent out in the “wilderness” of Seoul looking at bushes and other plants that have changed color spectacularly but will soon fade to a common green. This country has very drastic seasons which ebb and flow spectacularly. It begins with the cherry blossoms and spreads across the whole spectrum of plant life until there is little reason to stay indoors.

A Proclamation of Spring!

After a Seoul winter that saw very little by way of precipitation, the early bloom of the cherry blossom trees is a welcome substitute for the snowflakes some of us longed to see descending from the inky night skies. So, as the spring winds gust through the tree-lined streets, tiny white petals have taken flight to mimic the snows that never came. Donning spring clothing and cameras, all of Seoul seems to be out to capture this annual spectacle of natural brilliance.
