Let’s go to… Geumodo Island!

Geumodo is a fairly large island off of the southern tip of Dolsan in Yeosu, South Korea. With an affinity for island hopping and exploring the numerous (373) islands claimed by our city, we set out to visit this nearby island and do a bit of camping on a beautiful but slightly foggy weekend.

We’ve really been happy to display the various aspects of our city in the City Guide we’ve been working on, but we wanted to take some time and show a bit more. The southwest province of South Korea, Jeollanamdo, often is forgotten about when it comes to tourism. Many people stick to Seoul or Busan and the iconic national parks when touring the country. Beyond these typical tourist destinations, there are areas of the country that are rich in culture and tradition that you simply should not miss out on.

Off the beaten path – Hadong, South Korea

On an overcast Sunday earlier this summer, bored from the bad weather that’d been plaguing Jeollanam-do, Stephanie and I set out to find something beautiful. Living in Jeonnam, we have a good deal of options for beautiful locations, like many other provinces, but one area in particular always comes through. Jirisan National Park has long been a favorite of ours for its beautiful scenery, noisy mountain streams, and incredible mountains.

May is one of our favorite months here in Korea. The spring flowers have gone, but the mountains are bright green against the clear blue skies. Everything feels new again and slowly but surely, every temple in the country starts hanging their seemingly endless supply of lanterns.

Let’s go to… Seoraksan National Park!

Korea is blessed with many magnificent national parks for such a small country. The sheer number of mountains and amount of coastline in South Korea, coupled with the large population necessitating the preservation of natural spaces, has amounted to 17 national parks. Each park is unique in its own way and we enjoy discovering each park’s special features whenever we get the chance.

Snow skiing has been a passion of mine since I still had the nickname “Lil’ Britches” and wore all of my brother’s hand-me-down winter clothes. At four years old (I turned five on the 2nd or 3rd day of skiing, but it still counts) I first hit the slopes in Colorado’s Winter Park Ski Resort.

Lunar New Year – Unexpected Kindness

Few holidays are as important as the Lunar New Year in Korea. Like many East Asian countries, this holiday is a massively important celebration that signifies a new year and a communal birthday.

Every New Year we find ourselves doing the same thing: staying out late into the night, usually with a group of friends, and counting down to midnight. Recently, however, I found out that Koreans have a totally different tradition to welcome in the New Year. On January 1^st, many can be found hiking up the nearest mountain just before dawn.

2014: A Year in Review

HAPPY NEW YEARS! While we welcome a new year, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the one that has just concluded. 2014 was a year of transition for Hedgers Abroad. Finishing our contracts at our first job in Korea was a struggle of will and perspective that we eventually won; leading to a much better situation in public schools.
