Yeosu City Guide – The Expo

While it has been our humble home and the basecamp for many of our adventures, Yeosu is probably most notable for the Yeosu Expo which was held in 2012. This area of town has enormous buildings that were constructed to host a conference for oceanic sustainability and conservation a few years ago, but still hold a few attractions for visitors today. In a continuing effort to bring more people to our lovely city, we present our four favorite Yeosu Expo attractions as well as an English map we’ve made of the area. Let’s go to… Geumodo Island!

Geumodo is a fairly large island off of the southern tip of Dolsan in Yeosu, South Korea. With an affinity for island hopping and exploring the numerous (373) islands claimed by our city, we set out to visit this nearby island and do a bit of camping on a beautiful but slightly foggy weekend.

We’ve really been happy to display the various aspects of our city in the City Guide we’ve been working on, but we wanted to take some time and show a bit more. We have been asked countless times about our little coastal city of Yeosu. Many people want to visit this beautiful city, but there simply isn’t enough information in English online. Over the next few weeks, we will talk about our favorite things to do and places to go.

Let’s go to… Hahwado Island!

Our humble city of Yeosu is blessed with the gift of islands. While the coastline and city are beautifully juxtaposed against the blue water of the bay, the best way to get away and experience the slow pace of Yeosu is by hopping onto a ferry. With over 300 islands in Yeosu’s territory, visitors and residents have a myriad of options, each with their own highlights and charms.

The beaches of southern Thailand are relatively notorious for the crowds and parties that take place on pristine beaches and for good reason. The beaches south of Bangkok are stunning and attract a lot of people looking to unwind with a cheap Thai beer in each hand and perfect white sand between their toes. Just off of Phuket you can find all of these beaches and islands if this is that party you’re looking for.

While we have already described the beautiful resort and relaxing comforts to be found on Koh Mook in our previous post, we also spent time exploring the island and all it has to offer. From Charlie Beach Resort there are numerous opportunities for those wanting a change in scenery.

In Focus: Koh Mook

A 5 hour, $6 bus ride took us down to Trang Province toward the Malaysian border from the overly touristy Phuket. Once there we found our way to the pier where it became obvious that we had missed the last ferry and would need to charter a private long tail boat to Koh Mook.

And We’re Off!

We are officially on vacation! It is winter break in Korea, and we have a long 2 week break before having to go back to school. I know, 2 weeks doesn’t seem that long, but in Korea school is year round. We have been so busy throughout the holidays and the end of the year and we are beyond excited to be taking a break!

New Year’s Sunrise Hike

Every New Year we find ourselves doing the same thing: staying out late into the night, usually with a group of friends, and counting down to midnight. Recently, however, I found out that Koreans have a totally different tradition to welcome in the New Year. On January 1^st, many can be found hiking up the nearest mountain just before dawn.
