Yeosu City Guide – The Expo

While it has been our humble home and the basecamp for many of our adventures, Yeosu is probably most notable for the Yeosu Expo which was held in 2012. This area of town has enormous buildings that were constructed to host a conference for oceanic sustainability and conservation a few years ago, but still hold a few attractions for visitors today. In a continuing effort to bring more people to our lovely city, we present our four favorite Yeosu Expo attractions as well as an English map we’ve made of the area. In Focus: Tegalalang Rice Terraces

Bali is a world renown destination for its lush greenery, jungle, culture, and beautiful beaches. On our recent trip to Bali, Indonesia, we were blown away by the beauty and atmosphere that surrounded us and we immediately know why this island paradise had become so popular even before Elizabeth Gilbert caused its popularity to surge with her book “Eat, Pray, Love.” While certainly being a perfect location for Julia Roberts to rediscover her ability to love, Ubud, Bali is much more than a tourist destination, or a lovesick Mecca for middle aged women living out their own bildungsroman.

Guys… We’re Back!

Gosh guys! We’ve been pretty quiet over here at Hedgers Abroad for the past couple of weeks. A lot has been going on and we’ve been so busy that we had to simply put our blogging on hold. The main reason for this was Ryan’s mom coming to visit us! She has been to Korea twice now. The first time she came, it was our first year, we were still living in Seoul, and we were just Korea babies.

Yeosu City Guide – Kayaking

Of all the wonderful outdoor opportunities Yeosu has to offer, kayak is probably the most overlooked. Being a coastal city, Yeosu had plenty of access to water and the views from our beaches are pretty amazing. While the beaches, Cable Car, and ferries may get most of the attention on the waterfront, there are several facilities for renting and using sea kayaks around the bay, and each has its benefits as well as drawbacks.

Let’s go to… Geumodo Island!

Geumodo is a fairly large island off of the southern tip of Dolsan in Yeosu, South Korea. With an affinity for island hopping and exploring the numerous (373) islands claimed by our city, we set out to visit this nearby island and do a bit of camping on a beautiful but slightly foggy weekend.

We’ve really been happy to display the various aspects of our city in the City Guide we’ve been working on, but we wanted to take some time and show a bit more. The Fourth Festivities

There are few things that unite foreigners living abroad than national cuisine and holidays. Sure, we have friends from all over the world with their own unique holidays, but everyone comes together for the common purpose of community regardless of nationality. This past weekend we celebrated America’s Independence Day with a motley group of Americans, Canadians, Brits, and Scots.

Best Beaches in Jeollanamdo

It’s that time of year again: beach season! Beaches all around Korea are “officially” opening for swimming, camping, grilling, and other beachy activities. We’ve lived in Jeollanamdo for a year and a half now and we have done our fair share of beach camping around the province. We’ve noticed, however, that there is a lack of English resources about the beaches here in the southwest corner of the country, so we’ve decided to put together a list of the most popular and largest beaches in the area with a couple of hidden gems thrown into the mix too.

Weekends in Jeollanamdo

Three day weekends mean packing up the car with tents, food, backpacks, and good friends for a beach tour around southern Korea. Buddha’s birthday is a national holiday in Korea and we were given the day off from work. We debated heading to Busan for the lantern festival or just keeping it low key and staying away from the crowds.

Feeling Grateful

The warmer weather is finally here and it has done wonders to lift our spirits. Even the seemingly endless days of desk warming at school aren’t near as difficult to endure when the office windows are open and the sounds (read: screams) of students playing on the school field are filling the room.
