Let’s go to… Jeonju!

Each year the Hedgers Abroad set out on one of South Korea’s most unique holidays to challenge themselves both mentally and physically to decide Who…Wins…Hangeul Day!!! One of our favorite holidays, this celebration for the Korean alphabet’s creation pits both Stephanie and me against each other in some random challenge that we cook up at the last minute. This year we put a small amount of planning into the conception of Hangeul Day Challenge and we are proud to present the video of our competition.

Yeosu City Guide – Kayaking

Of all the wonderful outdoor opportunities Yeosu has to offer, kayak is probably the most overlooked. Being a coastal city, Yeosu had plenty of access to water and the views from our beaches are pretty amazing. While the beaches, Cable Car, and ferries may get most of the attention on the waterfront, there are several facilities for renting and using sea kayaks around the bay, and each has its benefits as well as drawbacks.

A short distance from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur lies an astonishing place known as the Batu Caves. This sprawling tourist attraction contains three separate caves, each filled with different sights but the largest cave sits atop the 273rd step of a towering staircase and was the sole reason for our visit.

Only In Korea – Cat Cafes

Stephanie loves cats. Ryan loves coffee. It is only natural that we at Hedgers Abroad are known to treat ourselves to an afternoon at a cat cafe from time to time. These specialty cafes are not unique in Korea, as we explored dog cafes, sheep cafes, and Dr. Fish (seen here and here) where fish nibble offf your dead skins cells while you enjoy lattes and smoothies, but they do hold a special place in our hearts as our favorite to visit.

Korean Noms – Bingsu

Every year, Korean temperatures steadily rise during the summer months. This rise in mercury coincides with the rise of a popular icy dessert that Koreans use to battle the summer heat: Bingsu. All across the Korean peninsula cafes, coffee shops, and restaurants start putting out advertisements for this popular dish on storefronts, sidewalks, billboards, and even music videos.

For a few hours a canal tour of Bangkok will surely satisfy anyone willing to put their apprehensions of safety and certified boat operators aside.

Only in Korea – New Dr. Fish!

One of the most common requests we get is in regard to a post in our first year for Dr. Fish. People seem to be pretty enamored by the idea of this unique shop and, once it closed, our readers have been begging us for an update on possible new locations in Seoul. There’s some good and some bad in this post, but we are here with the answers we’ve been able to gather.

A Day in the Life – Our Final Apartment in Korea(?!)

Stephanie and I hate moving; that should be said outright. We can travel for weeks on end, living out of two small backpacks and sleeping in a revolving door of hotels, but changing our base camp always presents itself as a much larger chore. Each time we’ve moved we have rediscovered just how much stuff we’ve accumulated.

Let’s go to… Hahwado Island!

Our humble city of Yeosu is blessed with the gift of islands. While the coastline and city are beautifully juxtaposed against the blue water of the bay, the best way to get away and experience the slow pace of Yeosu is by hopping onto a ferry. With over 300 islands in Yeosu’s territory, visitors and residents have a myriad of options, each with their own highlights and charms.
